Ticks, Fleas and Parasites in Morocco: Protecting Your Dog and Cat

A climate that favours parasites
In Morocco, the mild climate has a downside: parasites thrive almost all year. Fleas, ticks and sandflies take no real winter break, especially in coastal and warm regions.
In short: parasite protection in Morocco must be regular all year, not just in summer. Fleas and ticks cause far more than itching: they transmit serious diseases. The good news is that simple, consistent prevention is enough to protect your animal.
This article is informational. The choice of parasite product and its frequency belongs to your vet.
Fleas: small but formidable
The flea is the most common parasite. It feeds on blood, causes intense itching and can trigger real skin allergies.
How to spot it:
- repeated scratching, especially near the base of the tail
- small scabs or redness on the skin
- tiny black specks in the coat, the flea droppings
An important detail: for one visible flea, dozens of eggs are already waiting in the environment. Treating the animal is not always enough; you also need to clean its living space.
Ticks: the real danger
The tick latches onto the skin and gorges on blood. The problem is not the bite itself, but what it transmits: piroplasmosis and ehrlichiosis, diseases that can be severe.
The right move: remove the tick fully and fast, with a tick hook, using a rotating motion. Never crush it, burn it, or pull it out by force, or you risk leaving the head under the skin.
After a walk in nature or tall grass, running your hands through the coat takes a minute and changes everything.
Sandflies: the parasite you do not see
More discreet, the sandfly is a tiny insect active at dusk, mainly from spring to autumn. It is the one that transmits leishmaniasis, endemic in several Moroccan regions.
Some external parasite treatments reduce its bites. It is valuable protection, to pair with extra care during the hours when it is most active.

Prevent, simply and all year
The golden rule in Morocco: consistency over season.
- A regular external parasite treatment: spot-on, tablet or collar, on your vet's advice.
- Deworming several times a year: internal parasites matter as much as external ones.
- A clean environment: washed bedding, a maintained home, to break the flea cycle.
- A regular coat check: the simplest and most effective reflex.
This light routine avoids costly, painful diseases. Prevention is always lighter than treatment.
