A cat that never complains

The cat is a master at hiding pain. It is a survival instinct, but it makes vigilance all the more important. Knowing the most common diseases means spotting early what your cat will never say.

In short: the most common cat diseases in Morocco are prevented through vaccination, good hydration and regular monitoring. Because cats mask pain, any change in behaviour deserves attention. This article informs, it does not diagnose.

Viral diseases of the young cat

Panleukopenia and cat flu mainly affect unvaccinated kittens. Panleukopenia, very serious, causes vomiting, diarrhoea and lethargy. Cat flu looks like a heavy cold: sneezing, discharge, watery eyes.

Vaccination remains the best protection against these two highly contagious diseases.

Feline leukaemia

Feline leukaemia (FeLV) is a virus that weakens a cat's immunity. It spreads between cats, especially through contact or fights. For a cat that goes outdoors, the vaccine is often recommended.

It is one more reason to sterilise and to watch the contacts of cats with outdoor access.

Urinary problems

Common, especially in indoor cats, urinary problems must never be ignored. Difficulty or pain when urinating, repeated litter trips, blood in the urine are warning signs.

Important: a male cat that tries to urinate without success is a life-threatening emergency. See a vet immediately. Good hydration and suitable food help prevent these problems.

Parasites and heatstroke

Like dogs, cats are exposed to internal and external parasites, to prevent regularly. And even a homebody can suffer heatstroke in summer: panting, lethargy, the cat seeking cool spots.

Shade, fresh water and cool surfaces are essential during the Moroccan summer.

Recognising a sick cat

The cat expresses little, so learn to read the subtle signals:

  • it hides or changes its habits
  • it eats less, loses weight, drinks a lot
  • its coat becomes dull or neglected
  • it urinates with difficulty or outside the litter

Any lasting change deserves a visit. In cats, a small detail can hide a lot.

Daily prevention

A cat's health rests on a few pillars:

  1. up-to-date vaccination
  2. good hydration and suitable food
  3. a calm, enriched environment
  4. annual vet monitoring

For indoor cats, enrichment and stress management are an integral part of health.

The takeaway

The cat hides its pain, so it is up to you to keep an eye out. Vaccination, hydration and regular monitoring prevent most diseases. And a change in behaviour, even slight, is often the first word of a cat that does not know how to complain.
