Adopting a dog or cat in Tangier runs through a few active associations, a visit, an adoption contract, and a first trip to the vet. The fee asked is modest, often between 0 and 500 dirhams, and the animal is usually already vaccinated. Here is where to look in the city of the strait and how to do it well.

Where to adopt in Tangier

Tangier has several organizations and a very active volunteer network. A few reliable starting points:

Les Amis des Animaux Tangier

This Tangier association runs a 1,500 square metre refuge for stray dogs and cats, according to a le360 report from October 2025. It is a good first contact in the city.

Le Sanctuaire de la Faune de Tanger (SFT)

SFT says it is home to more than 1,000 animals, including over 650 dogs and 120 cats, and it offers dogs for adoption.

Volunteer networks

SPANA has no centre in Tangier. A large share of Tangier adoptions happen through foster families and neighbourhood pages that place kittens and puppies found on the street. Ask at your vet, who often points you to the active volunteers. Always confirm the animal has been examined before you commit.

What the law requires since 2026

This is new, and it applies to every adoption. Law 19.25 on stray animals, published in Official Bulletin no. 7533, now requires every owner to declare their animal through the national electronic service, to have it permanently carry its identification number, and to keep an up-to-date health record. A change of owner, which an adoption is, must be declared within 24 hours.

What it costs in Tangier

The adoption fee is modest, sometimes symbolic. It is mainly the first round of care to budget for:

• Vaccination: 200 to 400 MAD
• Sterilization, if not already done: 500 to 1,500 MAD
• Deworming and parasite treatment: 50 to 150 MAD
• First vet visit: 100 to 200 MAD

The strait's climate: humidity and parasites

This is the real Tangier specificity. Sea air and humidity keep fleas and ticks active much of the year, not only in summer:

• Regular parasite treatment, year-round, without skipping a month.
• Ear and skin checks in the routine, especially after seaside walks.
• A dry, well-aired bed, since humidity encourages skin problems.
