The golden retriever and the Moroccan heat
In Morocco, the golden retriever's main difficulty is heat: its long, dense coat holds it in summer. Four habits protect it:
- shade and fresh water available at all times;
- walks early in the morning and in the evening, never in the hot hours;
- swimming, which it loves and which cools it down;
- no shaving: the coat also protects it from the sun.

Coat and ear care
The golden retriever's coat needs brushing several times a week, and more during the moult, to prevent mats. Its drop ears pick up infections easily, especially after swimming: dry them and check them every week. In a hot climate, watch its skin too: redness, itching, damp patches under the coat.
Health: hips, elbows and weight
The golden retriever is predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia, like many large dogs. Before buying a puppy, ask to see both parents' x-rays and scores. It loves food and gains weight easily, and that weight worsens its joints: measure its meals and keep it lean. While it is growing, spare it excessive effort.

What it asks of you every day
A golden retriever needs to burn energy every day: walks, retrieving games, a swim when possible. It seeks its family's company and learns fast because it wants to please, so positive-reinforcement training suits it well. A home that is often away does not suit it.
