Caring for Your Pet During Moroccan Summers

Moroccan Summers: A Challenge for Your Pets
From June to September, temperatures in Morocco climb to 35-45°C. Great for sunbathing humans. For your pets? Potentially dangerous.
Every summer, Moroccan vets treat cases of:
- Heatstroke (hyperthermia)
- Severe dehydration
- Paw pad burns
- Massive parasite infestations
The good news? With a few simple precautions, your animals can have a comfortable, safe summer.
1. Heat Management
Warning Signs: Heatstroke
If your animal shows any of these, it's a veterinary emergency:
- Excessive, uncontrollable panting
- Excessive drooling
- Red or purple gums
- Weakness, confusion, loss of consciousness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
Immediate action: Cool the animal slowly (no ice water, as thermal shock is dangerous) and seek emergency vet care.
Prevention: The Basics
Timing of walks is critical.
- Dogs: Walk before 8am and after 6pm. Never between 11am-4pm.
- Indoor cats: No full-sun balconies in afternoon. Constant shade access.
- Outdoor cats: They manage (natural instinct), but ensure access to water and shade.
Constant Hydration
Multiply water stations.
- Always keep fresh water available.
- Change water 2-3 times daily (it warms fast).
- Place bowls in different house locations.
- Lightly mist the coat with lukewarm water (not cold) if the animal pants heavily.
Paw Pad Protection
Hot pavement can cause pad burns in minutes.
Simple test: Place your hand on the street. If you can't hold it more than 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog.
Prevention:
- Walks on cooler surfaces (shade, grass, beach)
- Protective boots for sensitive dogs (yes, they exist)
- Protective paw cream
Air Conditioning and Ventilation
- Ideal: AC. An overheating animal gets immediate relief.
- Acceptable: Fan + bowls of ice water nearby.
- Avoid: Leaving the animal in a car, even briefly. Interior temperature can reach 60°C in 15 minutes.
Summer Grooming
- Dogs: Short clip (2-3 cm) helps thermoregulation. Avoid shaving to skin (exposes skin to sunburn).
- Long-haired cats: Same logic. Lion cut recommended.
- Short-haired cats: No cut necessary.
When: June-July, before peak heat.
2. Parasites Explode in Summer
Why It's Worse in Summer
Heat + humidity (coast) or heat alone (interior) = perfect conditions for fleas and ticks.
In Morocco, parasitic activity runs year-round, but summer? It's peak season.
Parasite Treatment: Non-Negotiable
Frequency: Monthly, all year (no breaks in summer).
Options:
- Spot-on: Pipette on the back of the neck (Frontline, Advocate, Fiprotil). Monthly.
- Tablet: Oral (Capstar, Bravecto). Some last 3 months.
- Collar: Less effective, but an option.
Cost: 50-200 MAD per treatment.
Tip: Set a calendar reminder and stick to it religiously.
Daily Checks
- Check ears (warm zones = ticks)
- Palpate the coat for abnormal bumps
- Brush regularly to remove loose fleas/ticks
Tick Removal: The Right Way
If you find a tick:
- Don't crush (may be infected)
- Flat tweezers at the base, pull slowly and steadily
- Clean the wound with antiseptic
- Dispose of the tick (not down the toilet if alive)
Don't do: Ether, alcohol, or violent yanking (leaves the head embedded).
Flea Allergies
Even one bite can trigger massive itching if the animal is allergic. For a deeper look at parasite-related skin issues, see our article on pet skin care in Morocco.
Signs: Frantic scratching, skin lesions, hair loss.
Solution: Aggressive parasite treatment + often steroids (consult your vet).
3. Feeding and Digestion
Food: Spoilage Risk
In heat, food oxidizes quickly. Bacteria proliferate.
Prevention:
- Don't leave wet food out more than 2 hours at room temperature
- Store dry food in sealed containers in a cool place
- Slightly increase portions if the animal sweats heavily (dehydration = energy loss)
Probiotics and Digestion
Heat can affect gut flora.
Optional but helpful:
- Plain unsweetened yogurt (2-3 spoonfuls daily)
- Veterinary-specific probiotics
4. Alert Signs and When to Seek Help
Call the vet if:
- Excessive panting at rest
- Reluctance to eat
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- Lethargy (sleeping more than usual)
- Dark urine or infrequent urination (dehydration sign)
Veterinary emergency if:
- Loss of consciousness
- Seizures
- Rectal bleeding
- Difficulty breathing
5. Summer Routine: Checklist
Daily
- Fresh water changed 2-3 times
- Paw pad check
- Behavior observation (normal panting? Normal behavior?)
- Walk before 8am + after 6pm (dogs)
Weekly
- Brush for fleas/ticks
- Cool bath (lukewarm water, not cold)
- Grooming if needed
Monthly
- Parasite treatment (even in summer!)
- Vet check-up (optional but reassuring)
End of Summer (September)
- Full vet check-up
- Residual parasite check
- Gradual return to normal routine in October
6. High-Risk Animals
Puppies and Kittens
Less able to regulate temperature. Close supervision mandatory.
Senior Animals (10+ years)
Compromised thermoregulation. Keep cool at all costs.
Obese Animals
Double risk: poor circulation + large mass to cool.
Brachycephalic Breeds (Flat-Faced)
Bulldogs, Persians, exotic Burmese. Very heat-sensitive. AC mandatory. Some popular cat breeds in Morocco are at higher risk than others.
Sick Animals
Any condition (kidney disease, heart issues) = strict temperature management.
