Welcoming a Puppy in Morocco: The First Days Guide

A big day, for the puppy as much as for you

A puppy's arrival is a moment of pure joy. But for the puppy, everything changes at once: a new home, new smells, and the first separation from its mother and littermates. The first days lay the foundations of your whole relationship.

In short: the key to the first days is calm and consistency. Prepare a space of its own before arrival, keep a gentle routine for meals and sleep, and book a first vet visit quickly. You do not need to get everything right at once, just to reassure.

Before arrival: prepare its space

A reassured puppy adapts fast. Before bringing it home, prepare the essentials:

  • comfortable bedding in a quiet corner, away from draughts
  • water and food bowls, always in the same place
  • a few sturdy toys suited to its size
  • a defined area for the first days while it finds its bearings

In Morocco, also think about the heat: its corner should stay cool and shaded, never in full sun.

The first night

It is often the hardest. The puppy cries because it feels alone, not to defy you. For the first nights, keeping it near you can soothe it, then you gradually move its bed away.

A gentle routine before bed, a last trip outside, dimmed light, and plenty of patience. It passes faster than you think.

Feeding in the first days

At first, keep the same food it had at the breeder or shelter, to avoid digestive upset. If you want to change, do it gradually over several days.

A puppy eats little but often: several small meals through the day. Good food from the start builds its health for life.

House-training and the first rules

House-training is learned through consistency, never through punishment. Take your puppy out after every meal, every nap and every play, then praise it calmly when it goes outside.

The first house rules are also set from the start, gently and consistently: the same words, the same limits, from the whole family. A puppy needs clear cues to feel safe.

Health: the first vet visit

Book a vet visit in the first days. It allows you to:

  • check general health
  • plan vaccination and deworming
  • set up parasite protection
  • ask all your new-owner questions

It is the real starting point of a healthy life, and a chance to build trust with a nearby vet.

Patience and bond: the essential

The first days are not a test. Your puppy is not asking for perfection, just gentleness, consistency and time. The bond is built in these small, repeated moments, not in a single day.

Very soon, this hesitant little being will become a confident companion. And to discover which kind of companion is truly like you, take the Pettopia test.

Frequently asked questions

How do I handle a puppy's first night?
On the first night, the puppy is away from its mother for the first time. Settle it in a calm corner with comfortable bedding, near you for the first nights if needed. A gentle routine and patience are better than giving in to every whimper.
When should training and house-training start?
From day one, gently. Take the puppy out after every meal, nap and play, and praise it calmly when it goes in the right place. House-training comes with consistency, not punishment, and often takes a few weeks.
What should a puppy eat and how often?
A puppy needs food suited to its age, given in several small meals a day. Avoid changing food abruptly in the first days while it settles in. Ask your vet or pet shop for advice on the right amount.
When should the first vet visit happen?
As soon as possible after arrival. This first visit allows a health check, planning of vaccination and deworming, and a chance to ask all your questions. It is the real starting point of a healthy life.
